Give me a God damn break, people

*I'm repeating this everywhere I can, because it needs to be said*

http://www.ccawards.com/2005.htm
I'm fine with every other Web Cartoonists Choice Award, except Dinosaur Comics winning best anthromorphic comic, which, quite frankly, just pisses me off.

You'll see why http://www.qwantz.com/

A comic that is nothing but the SAME IMAGE REPEATED EVERY DAMN STRIP with badly typed dialogue beat every other anthromorphic strip on the internet?! The general populace of web cartoonist think this guy deserved an AWARD for doing not even a TENTH of the work very other anthro cartoonist does? For putting in not even the same REMOTE amount of effort? I didn't want to believe there was some kind of furry comic/artist prejudice with these awards... but what the hell else should I believe?

Everyone who voted for Dinosaur Comics should be ashamed of themselves. I don't blame Ryan North, because the dude's just doing what he feels like, making this comic as it is, and that's not hurting anyone. But rewarding him, putting him above other artists who are so inarguably BETTER than he is... that is ridiculous.

Amber M. Panyko, Ursula Vernon, those are people who deserved that award, if only because of the quality and EFFORT they always put into their work. Ryan North's work may bring people a quick chuckle... but giving him this award is an insult to everyone who draws anthromorphic comics.

Um, brian, that's not very nice.

Do you read qwantz.com every day? Have you been doing so for 2 years? Maybe if you had you could get away with saying the things you say here (but I would submit that you would not be saying them). Stop for a second and read your post over, dude; "Everyone who voted for Dinosaur Comics should be ashamed of themselves." Holy shit, you should be ashamed of yourself. Many, many people enjoy dinosaur comics - and most of them read it over and above many other comics out there on the internet, including myself. We're not prejudiced, or ignorant of what else is out there, we just know what kind of humor we enjoy.

Please do express your opinion, but try making use of some tact.

You know, it IS one of the most popular webcomics out there. You might do yourself a favor and not alienate your own readership, which probably has some crossover. (This is why you never see Jim Lee say some other artist is a joke. It's called being professional. Most webcomics artists have never heard of such a thing.)

Secondly, most anthropomorphic comics are insults unto themselves.

It's just an award, dude. I disagreed with plenty of the results, though some of my friends did win, but it's still just a made-up way of congratulating ourselves for drawing comics. Who cares?

My opinion is what it is, folks. I'm not going change it because Ryan North is a popular creator. That's called being a kiss ass. I'd much rather be jerk with a small audience than a suck up leaching on to the readership of a comic he's only pretending to like.

But at the same time, while Ryan reuses the same art with every strip, his self-imposed limits make it harder for him in other ways. Bill Watterson himself said that good art can make up for bad dialogue, but Ryan can't afford himself that luxury; his dialogue has to carry the entire strip every day. It's a far different, though no less taxing challenge than drawing a more conventional comic.

You know, brian, it's funny. Every one of the responses to your comment was rather eloquently put and remained objective (with, perhaps, the exception of this one). Every one of your comments in this thread has made you come off sounding like a ass, and did not in any way defend your opinion. If this is a debate, you've already lost.

Okay,

This isn't a forum. It's a blog. You want a debate with curtsies, please and thank you's, get into a time machine and go back to 16th century France.

More importantly, it's my blog. You guys are more than welcome to come in and say what you want, within reason. But to that end, first and foremost, this blog serves as a place where I can say whatever I feel like.

"Holy shit, you should be ashamed of yourself."

"Secondly, most anthropomorphic comics are insults unto themselves."

"This is why you never see Jim Lee say some other artist is a joke. It's called being professional."

That's being eloquent?

As far as professionalism goes- news flash, I'm not one. I'm a hobbyist cartoonist. One who says what he damn well pleases. If you don't like that, I don't care. I know you're used to web comic creators who kiss up to everyone because they're trying to get as many readers as humanly possible, but that's not me. If you don't like that, then don't come back. I could care less. You know why?

The lot of you came here to defend Dinosaur comics, something that's within your rights to do. Hell, you can even call me names. I don't give a shit. That’s your freedom of speech. Hell, it's actually rather admirable that you care enough about Ryan North's work to take the time to post on my blog about wrong you feel my opinion is. Every creator should have fans like you. But that's just the thing- you're posting on my blog to defend North- I'm hard pressed to believe you're ever going to come back to read my comic. In fact, I'm rather certain the only way I'm going to win any of you over is if I retract my rant and apologize to North.

That's not happening.

The right you guys have to disagree with me and say what you like of me is the same right that allows me to rant however I please to. Once again, if you don't like it- nobody is making you come back here. I can't say I'll miss you.

On that note, I'm done with this topic. I'm not locking it up, but I won't be paying attention, either. Feel free to keep posting about this if it makes you happy, it makes no difference to me. But at this point, I’ve got better things to do.
